"So when I watched Irma build up, I called the shelters ahead of time and said 'hey I'm here for you'". She said that that her crowdfunding effort began simply as "two people having Island Dog Rescue on social media creating a swell of support", and that "people have moved heaven and earth to make this happen".

She had made multiple visits to the US Virgin Islands since Irma, and was appalled at the devastation - and at the now-homeless animals left to fend for themselves.

While thousands and thousands of people were evacuated from the Virgin Islands, another kind of evacuation was taking place.

Finally, the furry refugees landed in the USA on Tuesday, where volunteers cared for them at Gear's farm while foster homes or relatives of their owners could be found.
