No child is vaccinated with a completed consent form.

"It depends on the year and a lot of other things are going to influence that, travel to other places where there is flu going on, change in seasons" Dr. Stevenson said. Most of studies show that flu vaccination will reduce the risk of flu illness by 40% to 60% among the overall population during seasons. Then they examined how well the inoculation was working by measuring the amount of influenza antibody in the blood at 4 weeks and 16 weeks after the vaccination.

There are a few factors that determine just how effective the flu shot is, according to the CDC, including age, health and how well a particular strand of flu matches up with the vaccine you got.

The flu shot, of course, is not flawless, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says getting vaccinated reduces the chance of catching the flu by 40 to 60 percent.

Last September an 8-year-old girl from Park City, Mackenzie Coyne, died from the flu, even though she got the nasal vaccine. The investigators now plan to conduct clinical trials, to attempt to show whether good mood definitely cause flu vaccines to work better in older people.

The hospitalization rate last season for influenza was almost double that of the 2015-2016 season, officials said. As a result, the researchers found that participants had very high levels of antibody - and therefore protection - for two out of three of the viruses present in the vaccination, even before they were vaccinated.

The panel also stressed the importance of pneumococcal vaccination for adults age 65 years and older and younger adults with high-risk factors, such as diabetes, heart disease and lung disorders as well as people who smoke.

Among children, ages 6 months to 17 years old, 59 percent were vaccinated nationally compared to 55.7 percent in MI.

- Wide variation in influenza coverage was seen across states among children age 6 months to 17 years ranging from 43 percent (Wyoming) to 74.2 percent (Rhode Island) and in adults age 18 years and older from 33.4 percent (Nevada) to 51.1 percent (South Dakota). "Influenza is an unpredictable infectious disease".

"The science on flu vaccination is clear", said Dr. Tom Price, secretary of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.

According to officials, the vaccine is safe and does not cause the flu although some people may have mild soreness and redness near the site of the shot and a low fever or slight headache.

"It will be severe and there will always be a flu season".

Although not a substitute for getting an annual flu vaccine, health officials also stressed the importance of everyday preventive actions to decrease the spread of flu and the appropriate use of influenza antiviral drugs to treat influenza as part of the CDC "Take 3" approach to fight the flu.
