Ukip elects Henry Bolton as the party's new leader

Henry Bolton called on Ukip members to "rally around the party and be united" as he defied the odds to be named leader in a shock result on Friday. A former soldier, Bolton is a one-time Lib Dem member who has worked as an European Union common defence strategist.

Meanwhile Mr Hamilton insisted that UKIP still had a goal following the referendum vote for Brexit and the collapse in its vote at the general election in June.

The dad-of-three, who told KoS last week the party had "a moral goal to deliver Brexit" insisted it needed strong leadership going forward over the coming months and years.

Phil Hornby spent the day on the English Riviera, and watched the build-up to an unexpected result.

The former Army officer told the party's conference in Torquay that "Brexit is our core task, however it is not the end of the line" and signalled a softening of Ukip's message on Islam.

He later became an officer with Thames Valley Police and stood for UKIP as police and crime commissioner in Kent in 2016, coming second.

Asked whether Ukip had avoided becoming the "UK Nazi Party", referring to comments he made in the campaign, Mr Bolton told a press conference: "Absolutely, yes".

Before and after the storm hit, Gear and a few friends worked to arrange for the animals to come to the states. "So when I watched Irma build up, I called the shelters ahead of time and said 'hey I'm here for you'".

He promised to reorganise the party to increase its effectiveness and said he wanted to project UKIP "firmly and decisively into British politics for the good of the nation".

His election will be met with a sigh of relief by many of Ukip's top command.

In a sign of UKIP's difficulties, it took Mr Bolton just 3,874 votes to win the leadership election.

"Without being united, we can not lead", he said.

Dudley councillor Paul Brothwood added: "I am extremely pleased that the membership have rejected Anne Marie Waters and Peter Whittle, who were intent on taking the party in a very unpleasant direction".

The favourite to replace her, Steven Woolfe, pulled out following an altercation with a fellow MEP at the European Parliament that left him hospitalised.

But he resigned just eight months later after a disastrous General Election.
