School guard burns four toddlers to death in Brazil

In Brazil, at least four children and a teacher were killed after a security guard allegedly set fire to a childcare centre.

Although a police investigation has begun it is not yet known what led the security guard named locally as Damiao Soares dos Santos, aged 50, to carryout the attack which left 15 others in serious condition in hospital.

More Americans have died from gunshots in the past 50 years than have been killed in every US war, NBC News reported.

According to BBC, Santos poured a flammable liquid over several people inside the day care before starting a fire. Santos died from his injuries at the hospital.

The suspect also set himself on fire and was taken to hospital with burns covering nearly all his body after the attack at Innocent Children's People Municipal Education Centre in Jana├║ba, in Minas Gerias, south east Brazil. Some of the patients are being airlifted to a specialised burns unit in the state capital, Belo Horizonte.

President Michel Temer moved to twitter and posted, "I immensely regret this tragedy involving children in Janauba". I, who am a father, imagine that this must be a most painful loss. Local newspapers report he was recently fired from the nursery. "We hope these things will not happen again in Brazil".

Police visited the home of the suspect and his family members to try to determine a motive.

The mayor of Janauba - population 70,000 - declared seven days of mourning.
