North Korean hackers suspected to have targeted United States electric power companies

Democratic Party representative Rhee Cheol-hee said in radio appearances yesterday that 235 gigabytes of military documents were taken from the Defense Integrated Data Center in September previous year, citing information from unnamed South Korean defence officials. In August, Pyongyang threatened to shoot intermediate range missiles towards the vicinity of Guam, a target frequently subjected to sabre-rattling from the North.

US President Donald Trump tweeted last week that North Korea has been "making fools" of US negotiators for 25 years, adding that "only one thing will work" in dealing with the Kim Jong Un regime.

An unusually aggressive approach to the North by Trump, which has included rhetoric hinting at US strikes and threatening the destruction of North Korea's leadership, has some South Koreans fearful that war is closer than at any time since the Korean War ended in 1953 in a shaky cease-fire, leaving the Korean Peninsula still technically in a state of war.

It said the United States warplanes flew with fighter jets from the South Korean air force and Japan Self-Defense Force in the first nighttime B-1 bomber exercise between the three allies.

The bilateral training mission between the U.S. B-1B bombers and South Korean F-15K fighter jets on Tuesday night followed a September 23 mission in which USA bombers and fighter escorts used pre-dawn hours to fly to the farthest point of the border between North and South Korea by any US aircraft this century. "What I am going to tell you is that the [South Korea]-US alliance, that bilateral entity, is there to deal with those types of situation and safeguard against them".

North Korea did not conduct any launches or tests on Tuesday's anniversary.

Two accused plead not guilty in Kim Jong Nam murder trial
Juliana, the first person Kim went to after being attacked, told the court "his hands were shaking a bit" but she didn't know why. Airport staff brought Kim Jong Nam to see Zulkarnain after the victim said he was attacked by two women from behind.

Late last month the USA flew B-1Bs over global waters close to North Korea's east coast.

North Korea has said Trump is "on a suicide mission" against it, with the country's foreign minister calling the US President "mentally deranged" in a speech at the United Nations last month. Kim is the third generation of his family to rule North Korea.

Seoul says North Korea has repeatedly staged cyberattacks on South Korean business and government websites. He revealed that around 235 gigabytes of military documents had been stolen from the Defence Integrated Data Centre, and that 80% of them have yet to be identified.

There is no evidence that the attacks were successful, and cybersecurity experts believe that North Korea lacks the ability to disrupt the power grid.

Rhee, now a member of the National Assembly's committee for national defence, said about 80 percent of the hacked data has not yet been identified, but that none of the information was expected to have compromised the South Korean military as it was not top classified intelligence.
