A Mississippi School Named for Jefferson Davis Is Being Renamed After Obama

Davis Magnet appears to be the first school in MS to be named after former president Obama. Davis is named after Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy.

A MS school named after Confederate President Jefferson Davis will have a new name starting next year - Barack Obama Magnet IB.

Davis IB Elementary School PTA president Janelle Jefferson told the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees at a meeting Tuesday night that the community voted to change the school's name to Barack Obama Magnet IB Elementary School. The school board, facing an impending takeover by the state over audits that found safety problems and other issues at schools, had earlier authorized PTA groups at three schools named after Confederate leaders to pick new names if they wished, The Clarion-Ledger reported. Critics of the school names and statues say they are accolades to the region's racist past, while supporters assert they represent history and should be preserved.

"They know who [Davis] was and what he stood for", she said. Students from each class at the school gave presentations on their favorite pick.

Actor Gerard Butler rushed to hospital after motorcycle accident
Last year, he could barely walk after being injured while filming for the action sequel London Has Fallen. While Butler admitted that the accident was "pretty painful", it also forced him to reflect on his life.

The name change will take effect during the 2018-19 school year at the school, the district said in a statement to WJTV. The decision to name the school after Obama was made on October 6.

About 96 percent of students in Jackson Public Schools are African-American.

The school's enrollment is 98 percent black.

It's unknown how expensive the name change will be, she said. "Having a school where there was input from parents, teachers and students - along with the school board - it seems like a model for how these decisions should be approached across the country".

Interim board president Camille Stutts-Simms said she approved of the change and described it as a "monumentous move".
