Colorado State University Student Killed In A Shooting Near Campus

With them were Air Force veterans Tristian Kemp and Michael Zamora.

After the ride-share driver left, Jones said, Zamora ambushed the three in the building's parking lot.

Zamora was a resident of Fort Collins, Colorado, but was based at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, reports ABC Denver.

Police say Zamora had socialized with the victims before shooting them outside a Fort Collins apartment complex located blocks from Colorado State University.

The Fort Collins community is trying to understand what led up to the shooting that killed two people before the gunman took his own life.

School staff tell our sister-station, CBS 4 in Denver, that McNealy was out celebrating her birthday with Kemp, Zamora, and other friends before her death.

The Larimer County coroner says the victims are 22-year-old Savannah McNealy, a CSU senior, and 26-year-old Tristian Kemp.

Neighbors in the area reported hearing gunshots and a woman screaming just before 2 a.m. Police maintained a heavy presence at the scene of the crime throughout the day Thursday. She would have graduated in December.

The other woman in the vehicle was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland for treatment of her injuries, and she is expected to survive, police say.

The killings of McNealy and Kemp bring Fort Collins' homicide total this year to five, not including three fatal shootings by law enforcement officers. Her name hasn't been released. When he got out of the Air Force, he continued to serve as a civilian. Police confirmed Zamora owned the handgun and two rifles found at the scene. She worked for the university's student media group and interned on the Creative Services Team.

"We are deeply saddened by this bad loss to our campus community and will share more information as we have it", the university said in an email to students and staff.
