Tropical Storm Philippe may form by weekend

The storm system will move across the western part of the island on Saturday and Sunday, and the government of the Bahamas also issued a warning for the northwestern Bahamas.

According to the NHC, environmental conditions are "conducive for the development of a tropical depression or tropical storm".

Central Florida could receive some heavy amounts of rain, mainly courtesy of the tropical disturbance, but the main bulk of the heavier showers and storms will be focused south of Orange County.

A broad area of low pressure over the western Caribbean is being watched closely by the National Hurricane Center. Regardless if the system develops, there will be heavy rain and breezy winds on Saturday that quickly spread up into east-central Florida by Saturday night.

Either way, heavy rain is expected for Cuba, the Bahamas and south Florida through Saturday.

Currently, winds are 40 mph with high gusts, and the system is forecast to strengthen within the next 24 to 36 hours.

Even if the system doesn't become Tropical Storm Philippe, forecasters say heavy rains from the system are expected to move northward across portions of Florida and the northwestern Bahamas on Saturday night and Sunday.

That's not good news for this year's Moonfest in downtown West Palm Beach, which is scheduled for Saturday.
