Astros Player Apologizes For Racist 'Slant-Eye' Gesture Towards Dodgers Pitcher

Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel is facing possible punishment after making a racist gesture during the World Series. Gurriel may be punished, including a possible suspension during the World Series.

Darvish, in his sixth Major League Baseball season since arriving from Japan, described Gurriel's gesture as "disrespectful" but was also forgiving in a statement that he posted on Twitter.

Though he wasn't scheduled to address the media like this prior to Game 4, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred took the podium to discuss the situation surrounding Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel on Saturday afternoon in Minute Maid Park.

Said Manfred: "There is no place in our game for the behavior or any behavior like the behavior we witnessed last night". I didn't want to offend anybody in Japan.

Despite the controversy, Gurriel is batting fifth in game four.

Gurriel homered off Darvish in the second inning of Houston's 5-3 win on Friday.

Darvish tweeted a response after the game, saying, "What he had done today isn't right, but I believe we should put our effort into learning rather than to accuse him".

Gujarat Polls: blame game begins as Hardik Patel meets Rahul Gandhi
He tweeted that he is not fighting against BJP, instead, the fight is between 6 crore people of Gujarat and BJP. He has denied the allegation. "These allegations are serious", said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari.

"He has handled this entire hard situation in an exemplary way", Manfred said of Darvish. "At no point did I mean that in an offensive way".

Gurriel hopes to speak with Darvish about what happened. He said he knows the Japanese are offended by it because he played in Japan in 2014. "I would also like to apologize to the Dodgers organization, the Astros, Major League Baseball and to all fans across the game", he said. Matt Joyce of the Oakland Athletics and the Blue Jays' Kevin Pillar were both suspended for two games this season after using gay slurs in separate incidents, so there's already some precedent for the commissioner to take action.

"Yuli has always demonstrated respectful behavior and is extremely remorseful for his actions", Luhnow said. He had no intention of offending anyone, but now recognizes the perceived offensiveness of his actions.

The Cuban-born Gurriel apologized for the gesture and remark after the game on Friday, insisting through a translator that he "didn't mean to offend" Darvish, and pointing out that he has "great respect" for Japanese players since he played in Japan earlier in his career.

Gurriel will lose $322,581 of his $12 million salary next year, which the Astros will donate to charitable causes.

The Astros lead the series 2-1, with Game 4 set for Saturday at Minute Maid Park.
