Sprint's Merger Talks With T-Mobile Are Said to Be in Peril

Sprint and T-Mobile could not be reached immediately for comment.

While Son has negotiated with T-Mobile's majority owner, Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG DTEGn.DE , on the basis that SoftBank and other Sprint shareholders would own around 40 percent of the combined company, he now shares the concerns of the SoftBank directors questioning the benefits of such an ownership arrangement, the source said.

Assuming that the report is true, it signals the end of months of rumors about a potential merger between the two networks.

A new report from Nikkei claims Sprint parent company SoftBank Group is planning to call off merger talks as early as Tuesday.

Investors were clearly disheartened by the news, sending shares of Sprint down roughly 9% and shares of T-Mobile down more than 5% by late Monday.

In the past three days, the companies have been unable to get past differences over valuation, according to a person close to T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom, who asked not to be identified discussing private information.

Jose Mourinho: Manchester United Fans Have Right to Boo Me, Players
Playing football for a striker isn't just about scoring goals. "But fans are fans, they pay the ticket and do what they want". Mourinho continued: 'I must protect them when they deserve it and Romelu always deserves it.

It's entirely possible this won't be the absolute end of the Sprint-T-Mobile talks.

The Wall Street Journal is also reporting that SoftBank may back down.

The two firms had held talks in 2014 on a merger but ended discussions in the face of opposition from United States regulators.

SoftBank looked into buying T-Mobile as far back as 2014, but backed down after telecom regulators made it clear they would block any acquisition of the fourth-largest U.S. carrier.

Apart from offering free Netflix streaming to subscribers (as T-Mobile has done), the two second-tier telcos have not made their presence felt in streaming video.
