White House distances itself from tainted Trump campaign aides

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders downplayed George Papadopoulos' role within President Trump's campaign, referring to him as a "volunteer".

Sanders later said Papadopoulos was a member of "a volunteer advisory council that meant one time over the course of a year".

The White House has acknowledged this one meeting as there is photographic evidence of it from Trump's own Instagram account (Papadopoulos is third from left).

According to sources close the president who spoke with The Washington Post, Trump frustrated his staff by being late to work at the Oval Office.

Papadapoulos, the third aide who was a foreign policy adviser to the campaign has pleaded guilty to lying about contacts with Russian officials and has since been cooperating with the investigation in a plea deal which could mean wearing a wire to implicate.

Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director is investigating whether Trump campaign officials colluded with Russians in the elections to try to help him defeat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

A Trump campaign supervisor encouraged Papadopoulos to make the trip "if it is feasible" on August 15, 2016.

Her comments echoed President Trump's tweet earlier in the day in which he called Mr. Papadopoulos "was already proven to be a liar".

When asked about that later in the briefing, Sanders insisted that it was only one meeting between Trump campaign officials and Russian officials, while trying to say that Clinton's campaign was actually involved in colluding with Russia.

Without citing a source or potential end date, Sanders said that the Trump administration believes Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation will end in the near future.
