Nadal 'Never Dreamed' Of Year-End Top Spot

Rafael Nadal said on Monday that he is ready to consolidate his year-end number one ATP ranking by winning his opening match at the Paris Masters.

The victory makes the 16-time grand slam champion the oldest man to achieve the feat and the seventh to do so on four or more occasions, having previously come out on top in 2008, 2010 and 2013.

"For me it has much more value (to) finish the year than being number one in the middle of the season".

His absence paved the way for Rafael Nadal, who secured his place at the top of the ATP rankings with victory over Hyeon Chung.

Sky Sports will have the action from the final Masters 1000 tournament of the year in Paris all this week.

"I'm very very happy for everything". It's been an wonderful year, ' he said after the match. Means a lot, no?

Roger Federer's withdrawal from the Paris tournament in order to rest ahead of the ATP Finals meant Nadal needed only one win to guarantee his great rival could not catch him and he avoided any slip-ups against 54th-ranked Chung, although the 21-year-old did cause Nadal problems.

John Podesta: 'I'm the Victim' of Donald Trump's 'Big Lie'
According to the indictment , the lobbying firms were paid $2 million from offshore accounts controlled by Manafort. President Trump tweeted earlier today that Democrats are "in a dither" over the Podesta controversy.

Another home player, Lucas Pouille, kept his slim hopes of reaching London alive by seeing off Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4, but US Open runner-up Kevin Anderson's chances ended with a 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 loss to Fernando Verdasco.

Nadal sat out last week's event in Basel to rest his knees after a successful hard-court season and put in a patchy performance.

Nadal has enjoyed repeated success in Paris, winning the French Open 10 times at Roland Garros, but he has never won the title at Bercy.

Nadal will next face Pablo Cuevas in the last 16 on Thursday, after the unseeded Uruguayan edged out Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/1), 6-2.

Earlier on Wednesday, fourth seed Alexander Zverev was dumped out by Haase in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 second-round defeat.

But he roared past the competition at Roland Garros before landing his 16th Slam in NY and he will now look to end his season on a high in Paris-Bercy before heading to London for the ATP World Tour Finals.
