Three people were killed and 10 injured in a stampede that broke out in Bihar's Begusarai district, ANI reported today.

Former Chief Minister of Bihar Lalu Prasad Yadav tweeted, "Saddened to hear the news of stampede at Ganga ghat during Kartik Purnima bathing ritual". He further added that the identities of the women have not been ascertained yet.

Thousands of devotees congregated at various river banks of the river Ganga including Haridwar on the occasion of Kartik Purnima, a festival devoted to Lord Vishnu.

Authorities confirmed that the three persons killed were women and said efforts are on to identify the bodies. He also directed the district officials to provide free treatment to anyone injured in the incident. Sources said the death toll might go up.

Asked if he was ruling out a possibility of stampede, Singhal told PTI, "We will reach a final conclusion only after post-mortem reports arrive".
