Pennsylvania's unemployment rate reaches lowest point in 10 years

Professional and business services had shown the most growth this year, adding more than 4,000 jobs.

The unemployment percentage dipped from 3.8 percent in September to 3.6 percent in October, the lowest rate it has been in Kansas since August 2000. Both of those represent changes of less than 0.5 percent. More than 1,000 fewer people were unemployed locally in October compared with a year ago, while year-over-year unemployment fell by more than 6,000 statewide.

Emilie Doerksen, a labor market economist for the department, said the retail trade sector did not add as many seasonal jobs in October as expected, mirroring a national trend as more and more consumers do their holiday shopping online. But the agency says nonfarm employment has fallen for three consecutive months by a total of 3,900 jobs, to 495,800 in October.
