5 militants, soldier killed in JK's Bandipora, search operation underway

One IAF Garud commando was martyred and five terrorists including the nephew of 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind Zakir-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, have been killed by the security forces in north Kashmir's Bandipora district on Saturday.

The Garud Commando Force is the special forces unit of the IAF.

The officers involved in the operation had first surrounded Chandergeer village in Bandipora districts Hajin area, following specific information about the presence of terrorists there. Total of 6 LeT militants eliminated. Six weapons were also recovered from the encounter site. Reportedly, one of the dead militants was the son of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.

Earlier in the day, large number of people defied curfew-like restrictions, imposed by the authorities, to attend the funeral of slain militant Mugees Ahmad Mir.

An IAF Garud commando, identified as Nirala, was also killed in the firefight.
