Trump renews call for 'ban' after deadly attack in Egypt

President Abdel Fattah al Sisi convened an emergency security meeting soon after the attack, state television reported.

"I am deeply saddened by the cowardly terrorist act that targeted a mosque, in northern Sinai, and resulting deaths and injuries, the Crown Prince said".

The president further promised that Egypt's army and policemen will shortly reestablish control and security, asserting, "we will respond to this terrorist attack vigorously".

Islamist militants are suspected of orchestrating the attack on a mosque in Egypt's volatile Sinai Peninsula on Friday, killing at least 85 people and injuring at least 80 others, Egyptian media reported.

Egypt later said it would delay the opening of the Rafah border crossing to Gaza after the attack due to security concerns. Militants have killed hundreds of police and soldiers since fighting there intensified over the last three years. Reportedly, the assailants also set the vehicles parked in the area on fire to block off access to the mosque.

Arabiya news channel and some local sources said some of the worshippers were Sufis, whom groups such as Islamic State consider targets because they revere saints and shrines, which for Islamists is tantamount to idolatry. Two groups were firing at ambulances to deter them, said Mohamed, a witness.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with Egypt.

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Margot Wallstrom: "I strongly condemn the attack in Sinai, Egypt".

The militants have been unable to control territory, but the military and security forces have also been unable to bring security, as the extremists continuously carry out attacks.
