Amazon Web Services releases five new Elemental cloud tools for video publishers

For those pivoting to video, or others who are just getting started, Amazon Web Services released five new video tools built by AWS Elemental that make it easier to use cloud computing as the engine for video distribution. Amazon Sumerian will be available for preview starting today, and works on all browsers supporting WebGL or WebVR graphics rendering such as Daydream, HTC Vive, iOS mobile devices and Oculus Rift.

Amazon Sumerian includes a web-based editor that allows anyone to drag and drop 3D objects (e.g. furniture, and buildings) and characters into "scenes" (e.g. rooms, office environments, and landscapes). As such, Sumerian could help democratize AR and VR app creation for more professionals without a 3D graphics background, the post said.

AI support lets developers create animated 3D characters that can guide users through a scene by narrating scripts or answering questions.

However, Unity Labs EVP Sylvio Drouin told Ars a year ago that the Unity Labs team has focused heavily on making its own way for creatives to build VR worlds without advanced technical knowledge. Note that you will need an AWS Account Number to apply.

Such applications typically run on mobile devices, in web browsers or specialised headsets such as the Facebook-produced Oculus Rift.

Asset Import: Upload 3D assets to use in your scene.

"Customers across industries see the potential of VR and AR technologies for a wide range of uses - from educating and training employees to creating new customer experiences", said Marco Argenti, vice president of technology at AWS.

However, customers are afraid of the up-front investment and specialized tools needed to craft useful VR or AR apps. Amazon has its own template of pre-populated scenes, but developers can also use their own objects or those from third-party repositories. "For instance, we integrated Mapbox's points of interest and global terrain maps with Amazon Sumerian so data is delivered and rendered in real-time".

Amazon is also offering the integration of Sumerian with the artificial intelligence infrastructures, Amazon Lex and Amazon Polly, for automatic speech recognition, language understanding and text-to-speech capability applications.

It requires no software install or upfront costs - with developers only paying for the storage used for 3D assets and the volume of traffic generated to access scenes - and can be accessed via the AWS management console.
