Later in the day, Saleh said he was ready for a "new page" in relations with the Saudi-led coalition pounding Yemen if it stopped attacks on his country. The coalition had also imposed a blockade on the country, allowing occasional humanitarian access, with the aim of reinstating the internationally recognised government of Mr Saleh's successor, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

Earlier this month, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley accused Iran of supplying Houthi rebels with a missile that was sacked into Saudi Arabia in July and called for the United Nations to hold Tehran accountable for violating two UN Security Council resolutions.

In a televised address, Saleh called for new relations with the Saudi-led coalition, which he and the Houthis have been battling for nearly three years (since March 2015).

Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said Saturday he was open to talks with the Saudi-led coalition fighting Houthi rebels to end the three-year conflict.

Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi said all those who have identified a clear position in support of the popular uprising aimed at ending the coup and the restoration of the state "will all be partners in the present and future of Yemen".

The Houthi rebels denounced what they described as "sedition", meaning Saleh's behaviour towards the Saudi coalition. Arab media is reporting that the former president's supporters have gained control of key government installations in the capital, including the defense ministry, the interior ministry and Sana'a Airport. "The priority has been and still is to confront the forces of aggression".

There was no immediate word on casualties.

Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television said at least 80 people have been killed in this week's clashes between forces loyal to Saleh and Houthis. It also called on supporters, including tribal fighters, to "defend themselves, their country, their revolution and their republic".

Saleh's GPC party accused the Houthis of failing to honor the truce and claimed in a statement on its website that the Houthis bear responsibility for dragging the country into a civil war.

"I appeal to the leader Saleh to show more wisdom and maturity. and not to heed incitement calls", Abdel-Malek al-Houthi said in a speech on the group's Al-Masirah TV, adding that his group was ready to sit down for arbitration and abide by any ruling. He fought six wars against the Huthis when he was president, but joined forces with them to take over the capital in 2014.
