John Lewis cancels trip to civil rights museum, citing Trump's attendance

Other activists said they will protest Mr Trump's attendance at the event - a move White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called "very sad".

Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis has said he will not participate in the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum because President Donald Trump will be there.

Lewis concluded his statement on Thursday by urging "all Mississippians and Americans to visit this historic civil rights museum" once President Trump departs. "America can't really turn a corner with regards to its racist and violent past and present until the South, and particularly a state like MS, confronts it - and confronts it unflinchingly", said Gaude, who is a MS native. The almost 100-year-old civil rights organisation called Mr Trump's visit an "affront to the veterans of the civil rights movement" in a statement. White House officials confirmed this week that he had accepted the invitation. "The President hopes others will join him in recognizing that the movement was about removing barriers and unifying Americans of all backgrounds".

The NAACP has said Trump should cancel his planned appearance because of his divisive record on civil rights issues.

Trump ultimately visited the museum more than a month later on February 21.

Lewis' comments came less than a day after he expressed doubts about whether he could "live with myself" if he appeared on the same program as his political nemesis at this weekend's ribbon-cutting of the museum in Jackson, Miss.

Katie Blount, director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, said the department looks forward to celebrating the museum's opening.

Pamela Anderson responds to backlash over Harvey Weinstein comments
Kelly then pointed out that numerous meetings were set up by agents, to which Anderson said that was "not a good excuse". In a follow up post she wrote: 'I do NOT wish apologise for what I said, and will not get coerced into apology.

"The civil rights marchers who are being honored would turn over in their grave knowing that somebody who's stood for that stuff would be in attendance", Thompson told the publication.

The two men have traded barbs for the better part of the year after Lewis, a high-profile Hillary Clinton supporter, said he didn't see Trump as a "legitimate president" in January. "Trump doesn't care nothing about black folks and poor people in particular", Hampton said.

The national NAACP also disapproved of the invitation.

Lewis, a veteran of the '60s civil rights campaign, was scheduled as a featured speaker for the event. "He has created a commission to reinforce voter suppression, refused to denounce white supremacists, and overall, has created a racially hostile climate in this nation".

"We are better than that", Bryant said Wednesday of those who oppose Trump.

Those were ways of defiantly pushing back against African-Americans who dared challenge racial oppression, and taking a jab at journalists covering the civil rights movement.
