'Carnage' At Heathrow Airport As Snow Causes Cancellations And Long Delays

The airport's press service confirmed that hundreds of flights had been delayed or cancelled at UK's Heathrow Airport due to heavy snowfall. "Please check with your airline before travelling to the airport".

While the snow was worst in parts of Wales and the Midlands, the biggest effect was felt in South East England - and in particular at Heathrow airport, the busiest in Europe. Media reports say that hundreds of United Kingdom schools will be closed on Monday.

About 50,000 homes were still without power in France on Monday evening as storms that caused a ferry to run aground in Calais on Sunday continued to sweep the centre and west of the country.

Heathrow Airport also stated: "Some flights at Heathrow will be disrupted today due to crew and aircraft being out of position following yesterday's weather".

The newspaper estimated that there are 27,000 BA passengers stranded in London, 20,000 on the continent, and another 3,000 at other British airports, making it likely that it would take several days to get the schedule back on track.

Three flights were diverted into Edinburgh on Sunday night, including one from Marseille.

CrossCountry passengers battled with a previously announced strike as well as a landslide between Birmingham and Bristol. Reuters reported that the regional airport of Eindhoven was shut completely on Monday, canceling all flights.

"Airlines are responsible for ensuring their flights are fully de-iced before they are operated, and this is resulting in some delays and cancellations", the Sunday statement of Heathrow Airport's press service said. Temperatures in Scotland plummeted to nearly minus 12 degrees Celsius overnight on Sunday, leaving roads icy for the Monday morning commute.

Many highways have been closed since Sunday, especially in central England and Wales, which recorded the heaviest snowfall, recording up to 30 cm in some places.

Birmingham Airport has also closed its airfield as a result of the snow, and has not given any indication as to when passengers can expect it to reopen.
