This might be the creepiest viewership statistic Netflix has ever shared

The tweet was received with mixed emotions from some who viewed the streaming site's spying to be a little too Big Brother-y, but most were more concerned with Netflix getting rid of their favorite show.

If you're wondering what A Christmas Prince really is, I'll tell you that it's a brand new silly Christmas movie made by Netflix that I could not absolutely watch, no matter how hard I tried. But what seems to have struck a nerve is that Netflix is using information to share viewing habits publicly.

Last night, Netflix waded into the choppy waters of corporate brand tweeting, and in doing so, they accidentally reminded us all why we're kind of scared of corporations in 2017.

Netflix has kept up the snark in its replies, though the person running the account has also reassured some users that their viewing habits aren't worth shaming them over. However, many people are either unaware of such data collection practices or are indifferent about them, and thus are quite surprised when presented with the facts.

One serious Johnny Depp fan watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl every single day this year, while another Canadian user watched the third Lord of the Rings movie 361 times. It's what you'd expect from Facebook and Google, whose product you happen to be.

The collection and processing of data on users is usually a part of the terms and conditions of signing up for services such as Netflix, but comes with legal responsibilities under the Data Protection Act. That adds up to more than one billion hours every week.

While both viewpoints could be right in certain ways, it remains to be seen how Netflix responds to the hullabaloo considering that its tweet has, within a day, garnered over 100,000 retweets and 400,000 likes.
