New York City Chaos: Explosion Reported Near Times Square

A suspect is in custody following what appears to be an attempted terrorist attack at New York City's Port Authority Bus Terminal Monday morning.

A pipe bomb exploded below the Port Authority near 42nd street between 8th and 9th ave.

The bus terminal is connected to different sections of the sprawling Times Square subway station - which serves 10 train lines - through a long, narrow below-ground tunnel that carries thousands of commuters during rush hour.

Police said Ullah, who was also injured in the blast, is in custody.

None of the injuries to the three other people were life-threatening, according to the New York City Fire Department. He was carrying a homemade explosive device, officials said.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the explosion an "attempted terror attack" and said there were no additional known incidents. The weapon was based on a pipe bomb and was fixed to the suspect with zip ties and velcro, according to police.

Mobile looks to join pay-TV market by buying cord-cutting service Layer3
What Layer3 does seems very different from the kind of mobile video entertainment synergy T-Mobile wants to provide. Layer3 TV was founded in 2013 with the goal of being a better cable TV provider.

It's possible the device either malfunctioned or did not go off the way it was supposed to, according to one NYPD source. A federal law enforcement official told CBS News' Jeff Pegues the device malfunctioned. According to O'Neill, police are trying to determine if the hallway is where Ullah meant to detonate the device.

Alicja Wlodkowski, 51, said that she had been in a restaurant inside the Port Authority when she suddenly saw a crowd of people running.

The attack was the second on New Yorkers in six weeks, coming after a man in a rented truck drove up a crowded bike path on Halloween, killing eight and injuring 12.

Several New York City subway lines connect at or near the Port Authority.

The suspect, Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, was indicted last month on murder and terror-related charges, the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY said.

The White House said in a statement that President Donald Trump was briefed as the situation unfolded.
