Militants stormed an intelligence agency training centre in Kabul on Monday in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group, triggering an intense gunbattle with Afghan police.

The gunmen, who launched their assault with a vehicle bomb and rocket-propelled grenades, were wearing police uniforms.

Although details of the attack are still unclear, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry told Reuters that two members of Afghan security forces were wounded but their injuries were not life threatening. The militants took up positions at the construction site in order to fire down on the training centre.

ISIS claimed in a statement that two of its fighters had carried out the attack.

Security in Kabul has been ramped up since May 31 when a massive truck bomb ripped through the city's diplomatic quarter, killing about 150 and wounding around 400 people, mostly civilians. At least nine people were killed and more than 50 injured in the blast in the southwestern city of Quetta. No-one immediately claimed responsibility for either blast. The slain officer was the district police commander, he added.

"It took so long to kill the attackers because there are a lot of houses nearby the scene of the attack", Safi said.

Elsewhere in the country, a Taliban suicide attacker detonated a auto bomb in the southern city of Lashkar Gah, capital of Helmand province, late Monday killing at least two civilians and wounding 30 people. There was no immediate claim of responsibility from the Taliban, who regularly stage attacks across the country and have seized control of several districts.
