Texans Expected To Retain Bill O'Brien

Texans head coach Bill O'Brien is planning a year-end meeting Monday with Bob McNair in which he'll tell the team owner that he can not continue working with general manager Rick Smith.

O'Brien has one year remaining on the five-year deal he signed upon leaving Penn State to become a first-time National Football League head coach.

Alex Marvez of Sporting News reported Sunday that Texans head coach Bill O'Brien was set to force owner Bob McNair to choose between keeping him or Smith for 2018 and beyond.

It remains possible Smith and O'Brien return with some restructuring around them, but it appears less likely in light of Friday's report by insider Aaron Wilson on the climate of the front office.

One way to remedy that is an option sources say McNair is considering: Elevating Smith's position out of the football operation and giving O'Brien more say in personnel decisions.

During Smith's tenure, the Texans have made four playoff appearances and won the AFC South on four occasions. It can't hurt that O'Brien has the support of franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson, who missed the second half of the year with a torn ACL.

'It's toxic, ' one source said.

O'Brien was hired in Houston prior to the 2014 season. Injuries also cost the Texans' arguably their two best players on defense - J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus - for much of the season.

Houston (4-12) lost its final six games of the season and nine of its last 10, prompting speculation there may be a shake-up in the front office, on the coaching staff or both.
