Hot air balloon carrying tourists crashes in Egypt

About 20 people were on board when the accident occurred on Friday.

The incident was caused by strong winds that forced the balloon off its course above the city's temples and tombs. The tourist who died was South African.

The health ministry said a woman was killed and 12 people injured but gave no further details. Luxor Governor Mahmoud Badr said a statement about the incident would be released shortly, according to AFP.

All of those involved in the accident are believed to be foreign tourists.

The balloon was carrying both Egyptians and foreign tourists, with the nationality of the latter not yet having been disclosed. The tragedy came four years after a hot air balloon crash injured 13 tourists seeking an aerial view of the city.

In 2016, 22 Chinese tourists suffered minor injuries in another balloon crash, which prompted the country to temporarily halt flights while it tightened safety measures.
