Florida sees first snow in about 30 years

Residents across a huge swath of the USA are hunkering down, waiting out a massive winter storm packing snow, ice and high winds, followed by brutal cold, as it moves up the Eastern Seaboard. Five to eight centimetres (2-3ins) of snow were expected in northeast Florida, where there have been warnings of icy roads, power cuts and freezing temperatures.

Much of the eastern United States is in the grips of a sustained cold spell that has frozen parts of Niagara Falls on the American and Canadian sides, played havoc with public works causing pipes to freeze and water mains to burst, and impeded firefighting in places where temperatures barely broke 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

The storm caps a week of brutal cold across the nation that has left at least 16 people dead.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) urged state residents to stay safe considering the cold weather isn't expected to pass until Thursday and could possibly cause power outages. Snow was reported in Savannah, Georgia, while freezing rain and ice covered broad areas of southern states. Forecasters say the "bomb cyclone" is likely to intensify.

Flights across the nation have been canceled ahead of the predicted winter storm that is expected to hit the East Coast this week.

More arctic air in the forecast as we head into the weekend.

As the cold pushed farther northward, Jerry Gorans found himself stunned by the frigid temperatures as he walked along the waterfront City Dock of Annapolis, Maryland, where birds stood still on icy water. Along the I-95 corridor, we will see snow developing from south to north over the course of the afternoon.

"If they can't get in the heat, they'll freeze to death and they'll be gone", McMaster said.

Blizzard warnings were also in effect along coastal areas of North Carolina and Virginia, including Norfolk.

The weather service said its Tallahassee office had measured snow and sleet accumulation of 0.1 inch (2.5 mm) on its roof, the first snow in Florida's capital since 1989.

It was the first measurable snow there in 28 years, according to Weather.com, and led to closing parts of Interstate 10 on Wednesday morning.

Staten Island and Queens also face a flood threat between 9 a.m. and noon Thursday as the storm will push tides as much as 12 to 18 inches higher than normal, said Faye Morrone, a weather service meteorologist in Upton, New York.
