Massive delays reported at JFK Airport after winter storm

The storm raked the East Coast with heavy snowfall, glacial temperatures and high winds, forcing the cancellation of thousands of flights and causing thousands more delays.

The eastern United States and Canada froze Saturday under record-breaking low temperatures following a deadly winter storm as New York's flagship airport descended into chaos, battling to contain flight backlog.

Things were only made worse when the right wing of a China Southern plane hit the tail of a Kuwait Airways airliner, damaging both aircrafts, according to the Port Authority.

Both planes sustained damage but no passengers on the Kuwait-bound flight were injured.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the China Southern plane was being towed during the collision, which occurred just after midnight.

Passengers arriving at the Queens airport said on Twitter they have waited as many as six hours on the tarmac before their plane docked at a gate, then as many as eight hours to collect their baggage from carousels.

Flightradar24 - a flight tracking website - also said over 70 planes have been parked at JFK between 6 and 48 hours. More than 24-hours later, she's still at the airport. The airline said it was working with authorities in NY to investigate.

Good or bad, publicity is still publicity and it's embarrassing to work for a website where they're the biggest stars. Suicide is not, and never will be a joking matter - something that should have been obvious to Paul.

"Still waiting at terminal 1 for flight AF008 luggage, no food no water no wifi for 9 hours".

Gates that handle worldwide flights reached capacity, causing some planes to be held on the tarmac before terminal gates would be available. The authority was providing portable staircases and buses to deplane passengers and bring them into the terminal. Pilot saying airport control is "chaotic". "Is anyone there?", tweeted one passenger who had landed on a flight from Paris at 8 p.m.

Another passenger, meanwhile, said that passengers began calling 911 from the plane while they waited and others began "to threaten to break open the emergency exit".

"After landing 3.5 hours ago, #DY7019 awaits a gate. Unacceptable customer service!" one of the passengers tweeted.

American Airlines said "another aircraft reporting seeing something (from the engine)... as flight 1318 was taxiing for departure".

But the airline said it would not be responsible for arrangements or transportation to/from an alternative airport or hotel or overnight expenses caused by the bad weather.
