Bumper Christmas as shoppers spend £1 billion more - English

Aldi's market share rose to 6.8% from 6.0%, while Lidl's increased to 5.0% from 4.4%, Kantar said.

German discounter duo Lidl and Aldi shared the title of Britain's fastest growing supermarket in the three months to the end of December, figures published by Kantar Worldpanel on Tuesday revealed. Sainsbury's managed to increase sales across its convenience stores, larger supermarkets and online deliveries, growing overall by 2.0%.

Nielsen's data also showed that grocery spend in the four weeks ending December 30 hit £10.5 billion, a 3.7 per cent year-on-year rise. For the 12 weeks ended December 30, Aldi's market share rose to 7.5% from 6.9% for the comparable period ended December 31, 2016, while Lidl's rose to 4.9% from 4.4%.

Kantar also found that overall online supermarket sales enjoyed their biggest ever Christmas, with a 4.9 per cent surge compared to the same period past year.

Asda grew sales by 2.2 per cent, Morrisons recorded 2.1 per cent of growth while Sainsbury's was up two per cent.

The Co-op was the only grocer to have recorded a decline in sales, with a 0.2 per cent drop, and its market share also dipped 0.1 per cent to 5.2 per cent.

Well, you did if you read the books-but that doesn't make the reveal any less exciting. Yeah, that's about how I'd respond to hearing that too, TBH.

Tesco was the the fastest growing of the big four supermarkets in the 12 week period, helped by a 6.4% increase in sales of standard Tesco own-label. According to Kantar, the fact that Christmas Day fell on a Monday this year helped boost Tesco Express, as larger supermarkets were forced to comply with restricted Sunday opening hours.

Indeed, private-label sales at the supermarkets grew at almost three times the rate of the overall grocery market (6 per cent) as "most retailers made a big play on the quality and value of premium private-label this Christmas, which is crucial as shoppers look to economise not compromise". "Only 36 per cent of spending was on items on offer this year - the lowest level of promotional activity at Christmas since 2009", McKevitt said.

Figures from the BRC also out on Tuesday showed United Kingdom retailers saw a 0.6% like-for-like sales rise in December but the report highlighted how the "severe pressure" on spending was weighing heavily on some firms much more than others.

Overall online supermarket sales enjoyed their biggest ever Christmas: up 4.9% year on year.

"The supermarkets did well this Christmas, particularly amid fierce price competition and shoppers starting to feel the squeeze on disposable incomes", Nielsen UK head of retailer insight Mike Watkins said. Supported by a 7% boost for own label sales, more than half of the increase came from products beyond the retailer's traditional frozen lines. Ocado comfortably outpaced the online market, increasing sales by 8.4% to account for 1.3% of the grocery market.
