TV crew attempts to pass fake bomb through Newark airport security

Port Authority Police at the Newark International Airport said nine members of a reality TV crew were affected after they attempted to sneak a fake bomb past security.

Details about the arrests, including the names of those charged, were not released Thursday night.

A New York Daily News report said a law enforcement source indicated the TV crew "admitted they wanted to record the Transportation Security Administration's reactions when they found the device".

They were charged by Port Authority of NY and New Jersey police with creating a false public alarm, interference with transportation and conspiracy.

Others in the group "covertly" filmed it, she said.

The defendants claimed they were filming the incident for a television show, but could not provide media credentials, Pentangelo said.

Apparently, this was all an elaborate stunt to see whether TSA would detect the item in the bag.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office will charge the film crew members with the charges likely being for creating a false public alarm, conspiracy, and interference with transportation etc and could be charged over $13,000 per security violation.

The "inert device" - the technical term for a fake bomb - was made from vacuum cleaner parts and wires, according to CNN.

It was not until the offenders were arrested by security staff that they revealed they were crew members for Endemol Shine Group, a Dutch production company, that was contracted to work on the CNBC show "Staten Island Hustle".

The series, which is coming in the spring, reportedly "centers on a group of life-long friends and investors from Staten Island", according to a report in Variety.

In response to the Thursday arrest, Endemol released a statement saying that they were "looking into" the issue.

"We sincerely apologise for any disruption caused", the statement said.

"Without MBAs (or even college degrees) these men prove that grit, ingenuity, and street smarts may be the real key to success".
