Walmart Makes a Late Entry Into the E-Book Market

Walmart Stores, Inc.is joining with Japan's largest e-commerce retailer Rakuten to launch an online grocery delivery service in Japan.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. president and CEO Doug McMillon and Rakuten, Inc.

Amazon, which started as an online bookseller and has grown rapidly into other categories, dominates the USA market for e-books and has sold millions of its Kindle e-readers.

The online grocery delivery service is set to launch later this year, replacing Wal-Mart's existing operation, Seiyu, which was rolled out by the US retail giant in 2000 and now has more than 1.8 million users.

The launch of the new e-commerce business is the USA firm's latest attempt to crack a competitive overseas market, by teaming up with a popular local partner.

Walmart is challenging Amazon´s dominance as a retailer of e-books and audiobooks, launching itself into the segment for the first time.

Noting Rakuten's strengths in e-commerce, McMillon said Walmart looks forward to boosting its grocery footprint in Japan.

"We are excited to partner with Walmart because of its commitment to creating the best solutions to serve customers with low prices", Mikitani added.

Range Rover announces snazzy coupé model
There are limited edition of this model, about 999, will be developed to celebrate Land Rover's 70th anniversary. Interestingly, this would be the first production of two-door Range Rover in over a decade's now.

Walmart said that the service will start in the second half of 2018.

The plan is to increase capacity by establishing a dedicated fulfillment center.

This tie-up represents a pretty clear challenge to Amazon, both in the US and in Japan.

Furthermore, the new service will utilize Rakuten's deep expertise in e-commerce to offer a site with an optimized user experience, as well as leveraging big data and AI to offer a more personalized merchandise offering. The joint venture will see the two companies work together to sell online groceries in Japan and e-readers, e-books and audiobooks in the U.S.

Customers of the new venture - to be called Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper - will be able to accumulate points on Rakuten's loyalty program, which can be used on any of Rakuten's services.

In addition, the partnership will enable Walmart to sell eBooks, audiobooks, and eReaders from Rakuten Kobo in its stores and online in the United States. In 2016, Japan was the second-largest market outside the USA for Amazon, following Germany, with sales of $10.8 billion.

All eBook content will be accessible through a Walmart/Kobo co-branded app available on all iOS and Android devices, a desktop app and Kobo e-Readers, which will also be sold at Walmart later this year. In 2010, it acquired California-based Buy.com and rebranded it as Rakuten.com.
