Lorde Refuses to Perform at Grammys Over Song Dispute

She's the only Album of the Year nominee to be left out, and the only woman on the list.

Lorde reportedly turned down the collaborative performance, and therefore will not perform at all at Sunday's Grammy ceremony.

Lorde is joined in the Album of The Year category by Jay-Z ('4:44'), Kendrick Lamar ('DAMN'), Bruno Mars ('24K Magic') and Childish Gambino, ('"Awaken, My Love!"').

Speaking to Marr, he warned that the United Kingdom could not "cherry-pick" the elements it wanted. I do respect this vote, I do regret this vote, and I would love to welcome you again.

Variety reports that after a heated back and forth, the singer refused to perform when producers wouldn't let her perform solo. Sources close to the situation tell Variety that the Grammys approached Lorde about performing with other artists but not solo; another source said it was part a Tom Petty tribute (which would have been an odd fit for the New Zealand-born singer). The fact that she won't be performing feels like a glaring error, and a missed opportunity to celebrate one of the year's most successful records. According to TMZ, she will also not be appearing on the red carpet. Last week, her mother tweeted an excerpt from a New York Times article which pointed to the uneven ratio of men to women who have been nominated.

All of the male Album of the Year contenders are scheduled to perform in their own designated solo slots, so absorb what you will from the reported declined invitation.

The 21-year-old did however sing elsewhere this weekend at the pre-Grammys annual event where she sang with the likes of Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus in honour of the 60s band Fleetwood Mac.
