PLO to mull revoking recognition of Israel

PA leader Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to appear before the U.N. Security Council later this month to persuade the accept the PA as a new independent, Arab country without direct final status talks with Israel.

Abbas is angered by the Trump administration's decision to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and the last straw was President Donald Trump's attack on him last week at Davos.

President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to address the General Assembly of the United Nations later this month and is determined to present request to recognize Palestine as a full member state.

Under the agreements signed between the PLO and Israel in 1993 and 1995 - known as the Oslo Accords- Israel has complete control over the Palestinian economy, civil and security matters in over 60 percent of the West Bank. "He invoked an ugly and fictional past, reaching back to the 17th century to paint Israel as a colonialist project engineered by European powers", Haley said.

Israel and the USA, he said, sought to "liquidate the Palestinian national project".

Israeli authorities say such demolitions carry out court rulings against unauthorized building by Palestinians. Comparing him to a genuine peacemaker, Anwar Sadat, she asked, "Where is the Palestinian Anwar Sadat?..."

Hundreds of people demonstrated in Bern Sunday against the USA decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move its embassy there, the rally was peaceful. "His recent actions demonstrate the total opposite", Haley said.

White House officials, however, have said they plan to publish an American plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and believe it will appeal to the Palestinians.

Since 1967, multiple USA administrations have characterized Israel's construction of settlements in the West Bank as "ill-advised", "unnecessarily provocative", and "illegal".

"The U.S. administration is itself saying that it's not an honest broker in the peace process", Erekat added.
