Amazon's discounted Prime Exclusive phones ditch the lock screen ads

Amazon's Prime Exclusive Program launched in 2016 with the Motorola Moto G and the BLU R1 HD, both of which had lock screen ads.

Amazon confirmed to Business Insider that future models on Amazon's Exclusive Phone program won't come with the Amazon ad lock screens, and they'll still sell at a similar level of discount to the phones now available on the program. All Amazon Prime Exclusive Phones will continue to be unlocked and available at prices slightly lower than those without the Amazon experience inside. And while the lock screen ads are going away, special limited-time offers from the retailer will be viewable through a dedicated widget on the home screen. The move is more likely related to Google's recent ban on lock-screen ads from non-lock-screen apps, though. Amazon also said that removing the ads from the lock screen will allow for these phones to support features like facial recognition and fingerprint scanners.

Back in December, the search giant updated its Google Play Developer Policy regarding lockscreens.

Amtrak train collides with CSX freight train in SC
Amtrak officials gathered up luggage and other belongings and within hours put passengers aboard buses to their destinations. A "Go Team" with the National Transportation Safety Board ( NTSB ) is leading the investigation into the incident.

But hey, no ads on the lock screen.

Starting tomorrow, February 7, 2018, Prime Exclusive Phones will be available to customers without lockscreen offers and ads. Ditching the ads makes the Prime Edition phones even better deals than they already were. The program has since expanded to include phones from LG and Nokia, and there are now seven phones available via the program on Amazon's website. Prime members will still enjoy a single sign-on experience, have access to pre-installed Amazon apps and services, take advantage of free unlimited photo storage through Prime Photos, and more. We may be provided this information directly from the device or its manufacturer. For now, this step seems like a band-aid, and Amazon will need a more permanent solution in the future.
