Massive 6.4 quake hits Taiwan causing hotel to collapse

Taiwan is prone to earthquakes and has felt a few in recent days, including magnitude 5.3 and 6.1 quakes on Sunday.

A magnitude-6.4 natural disaster has struck near the coast of Taiwan, killing two hotel employees and injuring 144 other people, officials said. Preliminary information stated the quake was about six miles deep.

Photographs posted on social media showed extensive damage to roads and high-rise buildings.

Authorities said some people remained trapped but were unable to give an overall figure.

Four other buildings, including two hotels and a military hospital, also tilted during the quake.

Laura Lo, a worker at the 7-Eleven convenience store across the street from the Marshal Hotel, told CNN that the first and second floors of the hotel appeared to be severely damaged and police officers are conducting rescue operations there.

It's unclear if anyone was injured.

"Armed forces & government agencies are responding".

UP minister calls Kasganj violence a small incidence
Officials said the state government was preparing a report sought by the Centre on the violence and steps taken to control it. Further investigation revealed that the bullets fired on 22-year-old Chandan Gupta were shot from Saleem's house.

"Relief measures are underway", Tsai tweeted.

This is the second powerful natural disaster in the area in just a few days.

Earthquakes are a fairly common occurrence in Taiwan, which sits on the boundary of two tectonic plates - the Philippine Sea Plate to the East and the Eurasian Plate.

The quake happened on the second anniversary of another 6.4 magnitude one in 2016, which killed 116 people.

Last night's quake follows one over the weekend off the coast of Hualien on the east of Taiwan, which lies along "Pacific Rim of Fire" known for seismic activity from Alaska to Southeast Asia.

The Hualien Shangxiao Road Community Apartment suffered severe damage and was tilted 45 degrees, the first and second floors nearly completely crushed, Taiwan News reported.
