Veterans Are Divided On Response To Trump's Desire For Military Parade

The U.S. traditionally has not embraced showy displays of raw military power, such as North Korea's parading of ballistic missiles as a claim of global prestige and influence. Trump, after all, is the armed forces' Commander in Chief.

"I think a parade showcasing the military and the sacrifices they make for the country would be appropriate, it would be a way to say thank you, but I'm not interested in a military hardware display".

Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD said: "President Trump's bigoted proposal to purge qualified military personnel is in direct contradiction to the will of the American people and what's best for our nation's security. We'll put together some options and send them over to the White House for a decision", said Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

"I think we're all aware in this country of the president's affection and respect for the military", Mattis told reporters, while declining to address the costs of the parade.

WELNA: But Joe Davis, of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, says it might do the nation good if the parade were held November 11, Veterans Day, which this year marks the centennial of the end of World War I.

Council Member Charles Allen took to Twitter as well with a direct shot at Trump, writing, "Military parade down the streets of DC to feed an insecure man's fragile ego?"

AARON O'CONNELL: It's hard to imagine what an end of that war would look like, and that's what parades are for.

In 1991, tanks and thousands of troops paraded through Washington to celebrate the ousting of Saddam Hussein's Iraqi forces from Kuwait in the Gulf War.

Critics say it is a waste of resources and something the US hasn't done since 1991. When asked if there could be other options other than an act of these proportions to honor the members of the armed services, White replied that there was, but she highlighted that the fundamental thing is the idea of honoring the uninformed, without giving more details about the probable expense that the country will incur to carry out this Trump initiative.

"Tanks but no tanks!" it tweeted.

And at a February 6 Pentagon meeting, Trump told military brass he wanted the parade. The Mexican government has insisted it will not do so.

He also told CNN that a parade risks being "kind of cheesy and a sign of weakness" if it's just about showing off military muscle. This parade is all about an increasingly unpopular Trump exploiting troops for his own gain.

The cost ranged between $4.3 million (3.5 million euros) to $4.9 million (4 million euros), which comes out of the French defense budget.
