Microsoft is ending support for Windows 7.5 and 8.0 phones

Starting tomorrow, February 20, Microsoft will discontinue notification services for Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 (via The Verge). This means three things: you'll no longer receive push notifications, Live Tiles will no longer be updated, and your device will no longer show up on "find my phone".

If you're one of the few using the more recent Windows Phone 8.1, which dropped in 2014, Microsoft writes that everything will still work as usual "at this time". They will also lose the useful live tile updates that displayed information at a glance, and users will no longer be able to locate devices with the "find my phone" feature.

We have always known that the Windows mobile platform will eventually reach the end of the line and it looks like the end is coming very soon. Commenting on the same Microsoft via the blog post mentioned, "Notification services will continue to function for Windows Phone 8.1 at this time and newer phones running Windows 10 Mobile are still fully supported". Nokia did go all-in on Windows Phone, but did so as it entered what turned out to be terminal decline.

However, Microsoft has said that Windows 10 Mobile is no longer a focus, and users shouldn't expect new features or hardware. The news comes from Microsoft's Answers forum (via Windows Central).

This isn't necessarily going to affect a whole lot of users: Windows Phone 7.5 was first released in 2011, and Windows Phone 8 dropped in 2012.
