Kratom supplements have a new side effect: Salmonella

We normally think of Salmonella as affecting food, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that it's also being found in kratom, a plant that mimics the effects of opioids. Eight (73%) of 11 people interviewed reported consuming kratom in pills, powder, or tea. But in some cases, the diarrhea can be so severe that person needs to be hospitalized.

"At this time, CDC recommends that people not consume kratom in any form".

It's been linked to supplements before, and caused an outbreak in food powder in 2016.

She suggested there are probably more cases that haven't come to the attention of the medical community. The vast majority contaminated with salmonella create indications - including loose bowels, fever and stomach spasms - inside 12 to 72 hours of presentation to the microscopic organisms.

Kratom can be purchased easily and legally - at least at present. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had previously warned not to use the drug after it was tied to 36 deaths. Herbal products containing kratom are gaining popularity in the USA - people report taking these products to treat pain, anxiety or depression, as well as symptoms of opioid withdrawal.

Gita blasts New Zealand; several districts declare emergency
Buller, Selwyn District, Grey District, Westland, Taranaki, Nelson Tasman and Christchurch have all declared a state of emergency .

"We know that some patients are using kratom because they believe it can help treat their opioid dependency, but there's no reliable evidence to support kratom's effectiveness for this use", Gottlieb said. Food and Drug Administration [FDA] advocated consumers not to utilize Kratom based on the agency's discovery that it contained opioid compounds. It is not an FDA-approved drug.

On Feb. 6, the FDA reported that the kratom products have been linked with 44 deaths; these deaths, however, often involved other substances besides kratom.

There have been several signs since then that the legal status of the supplement may be headed for a change.

CDC stated in an announcement that epidemiologic evidence points to use of kratom, which is also known as Thang, Kakuam, Thom, Ketom, and Biak.
