VAR to be used at 2018 World Cup finals

The IFAB, football's lawmakers, formally endorsed the use of VAR in the professional game during its Annual General Meeting at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich.

Widespread trials in England, Germany and Italy have, however, been met with mixed reviews, but Infantino claimed a study of approximately 1000 live matches resulted in an improvement in the accuracy of refereeing decisions from 93 per cent to 99 per cent.

The game's law-makers have chose to give the green light to VAR at Russian Federation 2018 despite the teething problems it has been experiencing in the England.

But there are questions as to whether it is taking the soul out of the game. The use of electronic and communication equipment is strictly for tactical/coaching purposes and player safety.

Spain is set to welcome video assistant referee technology into its top flight from next season onwards. "For me, it's removing the adrenaline and my enjoyment of football". It's been trialled in various tournaments over the last three years and it just makes ideal sense.

Some Premier League clubs want VAR to be used only for matters of fact, such as whether incidents take place inside the penalty area and cases of mistaken identity.

War in Syria continues despite UN-demanded ceasefire
Control of Eastern Ghouta is shared between two main factions, while Syria's former Al-Qaeda affiliate is also present. Syria's northern neighbour had previously been a staunch supporter of rebel groups fighting government forces.

The referee, who has access to a pitchside monitor, can also initiate a review himself.

The Scottish FA says it will meet the SPFL and its clubs to discuss whether to implement video assistant referees. Referee Jonathan Moss asked to check if the striker was offside before finishing off Riyad Mahrez's reverse pass. Replays showed Iheanacho was onside when the ball was played and the goal stood to see Leicester progress to a fourth-round tie away at Peterborough.

The problems have been so widespread that UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has said the system will not be used in next season's European Champions League regardless of the IFAB decision.

"For me, I see a lot of confusion from time to time", he said.

Some sceptics also have reservations about implementing such a significant change at the World Cup, before all the kinks have been resolved at lower-profile competition. The four British soccer associations, which created IFAB in 1886, have one vote each, and six are needed to approve an idea.

However, that is expected to be a rubber-stamping decision as Infantino has repeatedly promised that VAR will be used at the June 14-July 15 tournament and has made it one of his priorities since being elected in February 2016. It is understood that all referees at the World Cup will have some experience with VAR, although there are concerns that the magnitude of the occasion coupled with a new system could cause some referees to be overly hesitant.
