The end is nigh for their diesel passenger cars

Japanese auto giant Toyota is to focus on more environmentally sustainable vehicles, led by self-charging hybrid electric cars, thereby becoming the first mainstream auto brand to take immediate action away from diesel, which includes all current and future generation passenger cars.

Geneva - Toyota Motor announced plans to drop diesel models from its European portfolio this year even as Volkswagen (VW), which sparked the fury over the technology, predicts a rebound. "We will not develop new diesel technology for passenger cars, we'll continue to focus on hybrid" vehicles, he added. The third-largest automotive company increased its sales in Europe previous year by 14%, while the vehicle market as a whole grew by far more modest - 3.4%. Since then, HEV sales have substantially exceeded those of our diesels.

The new model is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) as expected, shared with the Prius, C-HR, and the new Camry.

Last week it was reported that Fiat Chrysler - which also owns Jeep, Maserati and Alfa Romeo - would be ditching the under-fire fuel type from 2022. Ford still backs diesel but sees it disappearing in some segments, according to Steven Armstrong, chief of the automaker's European operations.

Toyota said the next generation Toyota Auris, to be built at the firm's Burnaston factory in the United Kingdom as part of a major £240million investment, would not include a diesel option, but would include two electric hybrids.

Ms Sherald saw the picture as well and shared it on her Instagram account, to which Ms Obama replied with three heart-eyed emojis. In the now candid photo , Parker Curry stares at Michelle Obama as if she is fascinated or in awe.

The Toyota Aygo's mid-life refresh brings about a selection of visual and technical updates, with the 2018 vehicle on show for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show.

A particular success has been the compact SUV - the Toyota C-HR - introduced at the end of 2016.

There are big changes under the bonnet, too, for instead of the outgoing model's range of petrol engines and a single hybrid, the new Auris gets a choice of electrified powertrains and just a single conventional option. Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines in commercial vehicles (including Hilux, Proace and Land Cruiser) to meet customer needs.

In 2017, HEVs represented 41% of TME total sales, rising +38% year-on-year to 406,000 units.
