Former Stoke boss Hughes in talks to become next Southampton manager

With eight games to go in the Premier League, Southampton have axed manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

The team, who are now one point outside the relegation zone, have taken on the form of their coach in recent months in that they've become nearly entirely anonymous, with no recognisable approach or identity to speak of.

Pellegrino was appointed at St Mary's at the start of the season, taking over from Claude Puel after impressing with Alaves in LaLiga.

Southampton hope to have their new boss in place before facing Wigan on Sunday for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Hughes is understood to be keen to return to management and believes Southampton to be a well-run club blessed with talented players that he had targeted - and missed out on - during his time with Stoke.

Pellegrino leaves St Mary's having won just eight of his 34 matches in charge, but the Argentine has acknowledged that he can not dispute being sacked by the South-coast club. Only three of their remaining eight league games are at home - and two of those are against Chelsea and Manchester City.

Shkodran Mustafi shines as Arsenal ease past Watford in Premier League
The result leaves the Gunners sixth, 10 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham in the final Champions League spot. Henrikh Mkhitaryan then sealed victory with a low strike that crept under Orestis Karnezis in the 77th minute.

"As you know, my period in Southampton has finished".

In an open letter provided by the Daily Echo, the 46-year-old said: "From the beginning I tried to do my best every single day, I tried to give back to the club and tried to represent the club with pride".

Of this season's contrasting fortunes, Pellegrino said: "We have been living a hard season for many reasons".

He also spent two years at Southampton during 1998 and 2000 during his playing career.

The latest 3-0 defeat at relegation rivals Newcastle on Saturday proved to be the final straw for the Southampton hierarchy, with the club in danger of being relegated from the top flight for the first time since being promoted in 2012.
