FDA Moves to Curb Nicotine in Cigarettes

A new Japanese study suggests that smoking increases the risk of hearing loss, in what the researchers believe is the largest to date investigating the link between tobacco and a decline in hearing.

Slashing the addictive substance could cause about 5 million adult smokers to quit smoking in the first year of adoption, according to the FDA.

Tobacco companies have carefully engineered their products to be as addictive as possible, said Mitch Zeller, director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products. Those alternative nicotine-delivery products include e-cigarettes or nicotine replacement therapies.

"As FDA has acknowledged, any proposed nicotine standard would need to be part of a comprehensive package", he added.

"Tobacco use also costs almost $300 billion a year in direct health care and lost productivity".

"Our plan demonstrates a greater awareness that nicotine, while highly addictive, is delivered through products on a continuum of risk", Gottlieb said in a statement.

"There is no other single action our country can take that would prevent more young people from smoking or save more lives".

Rabada denies the contact was intentional but faces being banned for the final two tests of the series if found guilty. The photographs, taken on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test, have since gone viral on social media.

"This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to greatly accelerate progress in reducing tobacco use? the nation's No. 1 cause of preventable death - and bring us closer to eliminating the death and disease it causes", said the group's president, Matthew Myers. And smoking rates could drop from the current 15 percent to 1.4 percent. The public now has 90 days to comment on questions about the proposal and what level the upper limit should be.

Health experts have always been educating people about electronic cigarette that it is not just a secure alternative for the older tobacco cigarettes, but also a significant approach helping existing smokers quit smoking.

"Should a product standard be implemented all at once or gradually?"

While the regulation runs the risk of creating a black market of high-nicotine cigarettes, anti-smoking advocates applauded the new rule. He is also curious as to whether or not smokers will consume more cigarettes because of lower nicotine levels, or result to contraband tobacco if all else fails.

An additional wave of rule making will explore the role that premium cigars and flavors, including menthol, play in tobacco use.

Although the FDA sees benefits in lessening nicotine levels, it does not want to make cigarettes harder to get.

The speed with which the FDA acts depends heavily on "the political will of the administration", Sward said.
