An Engineer Noted Cracking In FIU Bridge Days Before It Collapsed

"We're open-minded to the fact that we may find more victims than we initially projected", Kemp said at a news briefing near the site Saturday. The cables supporting the span were being tightened following a "stress test" when it collapsed, authorities said.

On Saturday, crews worked to extract the first two crushed vehicles from underneath the collapsed span.

Police said four bodies are now in the custody of officials - the three recovered Saturday and one person who died at a hospital. "Brown's family and with the other affected employees", Michael Biesiada, a spokesman for the company said. The FIU freshman was studying political science.

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the federal inquiry, and a team of investigators arrived Thursday night. Authorities are investigating whether cracking that was reported just before the span fell contributed to the accident.

The bridge was designed by FIGG Bridge Engineers in Tallahassee and built by MCM in Miami.

Munilla Construction Management (MCM), which installed the bridge, said it was devastated by what happened, was cooperating with investigators and doing everything it could to help. "It's like still a flimsy structure".

"Varo you really gone??? We need to figure out what's happening quickly and do any mitigating actions to prevent further progression of damage and ultimately collapse, ' as we saw here". "A lot of times, the component or the bridge itself is constructed in a more controlled environment".

The 174-foot, 950-ton main span had been lifted into place just five days earlier. At this point, they don't know if the work that was being done was the cause of the collapse. The University City Bridge was built by the Munilla Construction Management and created to survive a Category 5 hurricane.

An employee working on-site has been identified as one of the six people killed after a pedestrian bridge created to connect Florida International University to a nearby Miami suburb collapsed onto the busy highway below.

Snow and ice warning extended through weekend
Elsewhere the rest of the day will be generally dry and bright. "Highs of 7C to 11C in light southeast breezes". Temperatures will also be dropping, with the "real feel" temperature as low as -6'c over the weekend.

The Florida department of transportation (FDOT) announcement late on Friday that an engineer hired by the university left a voicemail message with the state agency two days before the collapse, seeking to draw attention to the crack. Despite the voicemail, the FDOT says at no point did FIGG engineers or the FIU build team communicate that there was a life-safety issue.

The information wasn't received until Friday - a day after the collapse - because the FDOT employee was out of the office.

The company added - in an apparent reference to its engineer's conclusion that safety was not an issue - that "the evaluation was based on the best available information at that time".

Those making the commute now have to cross over seven lanes of traffic when going to and from campus.

The objective of the $14 million project was to provide a safe path over the busy highway after the death of an FIU student previous year.

"Our first priority is getting to those victims", he said.

Last week, the university posted a rendering of the completed bridge to Twitter, showing that it was meant to include a tall central column with cables. And documents show it was involved in bridge projects nationwide. He said the lack of the central pier and cables was "no red flag at all".

"I started yelling to civilians in the crowd, 'Please get me doctors".
