Boy, 9, shoots dead sister over video game controller

A statement from Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told of the boy grabbing a.25 caliber handgun when his sister refused to give up the video controller and in turn shooting the girl dead on Saturday.

A local sheriff announce yesterday (March 18) that the teen died of he injuries in a Memphis Hospital.

Authorities don't yet know how the child had access to the weapon they say he used to shoot his sister.

Cantrell says the two siblings were playing the game when the shooting happened.

According to Cantrell he has never dealt with such a case previously and doesn't know what kind of consequences the boy will face. "That's why I'm not too fast to say anything because there are juveniles involved".

The accident has renewed heated debates over gun control, and even video game violence, and how it should be addressed. "We want to make sure we're doing everything correctly", he told the Clarion-Ledger. Apparently, the teenager, identified as Dijonae White, was playing with the console game when the young suspect approached her, asking for the controller. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where she was treated for gunshot wounds.

The incident occurred over the weekend in rural Monroe County, Mississippi, as the children's mother was preparing lunch in the kitchen, the county sheriff said.
