Jaelynn, though, was still alive and in critical condition Thursday at a Maryland hospital after Tuesday's shooting at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County.

While investigators are still determining whether Rollins took his own life or was killed by the officer's bullet, Cameron credited Gaskill with preventing any more loss of life.

Cameron told a news conference that the shooter — who died after being confronted by a school resource officer — has been identified as a 17-year-old boy. Gaskill fired at Rollins, who nearly simultaneously fired back with a handgun, Cameron said. Gaskill was not injured.

"While it's still tragic, he may have saved other people's lives", Gov. Larry Hogan said of Gaskill.

Cameron says the shooter and the school resource officer both fired and it wasn't immediately known if the officer's bullet killed the suspect.

The investigation has not found any social media threats made by Rollins, the sheriff's office said.

Yingling says the two victims were shot, but she doesn't know how the shooter was injured.

Great Mills students joined others across the country to protest gun violence at schools during the National School Walkout on Wednesday.

At the Great Mills news conference Tuesday, Hogan cited his school safety plan to spend money on school security upgrades; the ban on bump stocks, which make semi-automatic weapons behave like automatic weapons; and the so-called red flag rule for seizing weapons from people whom judges deem risky.

After Tuesday's shooting in Southern Maryland, Carroll County officials announced that armed officers will now be stationed at some schools, leaving only Baltimore City without armed officers in public schools locally.

School officials report that there's been a shooting at a Maryland high school, that the "event is contained" and the campus is on lockdown. The town in St. Mary's County, with a population of about 110,000, is about 65 miles (105 kilometers) from Washington, D.C.

The group estimates only 20 percent of the nation's schools have a school resource officer, which the association defines as "a properly selected, specially trained sworn police officer". But it could have dragged on longer and proven deadlier were it not for the rapid response of a school resource officer. He said more school systems are recognizing the importance of an officer's role, which is not only to investigate threats but to serve as a mentor and educator. The officer, who resigned, said he had not been sure where the gunfire was coming from. "We did sleepovers all the time", he said.

Gaskill has been assigned to Great Mills since the start of the school year, and has been with the sheriff's office for nearly six years. Gaskill located and confronted the shooter, who was still armed with a handgun in a nearby hallway. Dfc.

Gaskill was responding to a home in Great Hills after neighbors reported fighting.

'This is what we prepare for and this is what we pray we will never have to do, ' the sheriff said Tuesday. Gaskill can be heard in the video giving several commands to drop the gun before the man eventually complies. "Simultaneously, the shooter fired a round as well".

A teenage girl who was shot when a classmate opened fire inside their Maryland high school has died, authorities said Friday.

In recent years, the sheriff's office has redefined its response to active-shooter situations. Cameron said, adding the officerl "responded exactly how we train our personnel to respond". Cameron said he did not know whether Rollins was intending to shoot himself or Gaskins. Officers also are outfitted with first-aid kits and have training in combat medicine. "I pulled over and nearly puked", said Adlai Traver, 18, who attended Great Mills in his freshman and sophomore years and knew all three kids involved in the shooting.
