Steve Smith and David Warner banned

Cricket Australia have announced that Steve Smith and David Warner have been handed 12-month suspensions for their roles in the ball-tampering scandal in the third Test against South Africa.

"In regards to the three players on report, I want to stress that we are contemplating significant sanctions in each case", Sutherland said.

"Make no mistake, what particularly Steve Smith is about to walk back into in Australia, in a sense I feel sorry for them", he said.

However, chief coach Darren Lehmann has been given a clean chit for the time being, as Cricket Australia concluded its preliminary investigations on Wednesday.

The suspension means the pair will be unable to play in the 2018 IPL, forcing them to surrender the $2.4 million contracts they signed with their franchises in January. We love all our players and they are going through a really rough time, as you'd imagine you would be in this scenario.

CA CEO James Sutherland added that details of an independent review into the conduct and culture of the men's cricket team will also be shared in "due course". That is why the process has had to be thorough to ensure that all relevant issues have been examined.

The last test series that falls inside the period of Smith and Warner's ban will be away against Pakistan in March next year.

The chief executive's decision in his news conference to studiously avoid using the word "cheating" to describe the conspiracy to scuff up one side of the ball with gritty tape would appear to have been an early false step on his part.

Steve Smith had to fight his way through Johannesburg airport as he returned to Australia following the ball tampering scandal. "Now they are anxious about him". Peter Lalor writes: "Banned players have been plotting a response that will test claims the ball tampering crisis was limited to three players".

New Clip Shows Dec Hosting Without Ant Ahead Of 'Saturday Night Takeaway'
The troubled on-screen partner of Declan Donnelly has endured a backlash after being charged with drink driving last week. Ant McPartlin will appear on this weekend's " Saturday Night Takeaway " as it returns to ITV following a one week break.

Cricket Australia is also expected to confirm a brief limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe and a home Test series against Bangladesh during the Australian winter.

He will not be allowed to captain Australia for two years, and even then, any return will depend on various factors, including public sentiment and that of the team.

Warner will not be considered for team leadership positions in the future, CA said in a statement, while Smith and Bancroft will not be considered for leadership positions for a minimum of 12 months after their suspensions. After Saturday's play, Smith and Bancroft admitted to tampering with the ball.

Bancroft, the player who was caught using sandpaper to manipulate the ball's surface, has been banned for nine months.

Smith is expected to pull out of the tournament altogether, while Warner will likely play but exclusively as a batsman.

Matt Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns will replace the exiled trio in South Africa.

"There are elements of courage and leadership that have been shown in this", he said. Warner had captained Australia's T20 team.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India also announced Smith and Warner are banned from playing in this year's Indian Premier League.

Both Smith and Warner have resigned their IPL captaincy roles with the Rajasthan Royals and SunRisers Hyderabad respectively.
