Governor Fallin Says She Will Sign Tax Hike Bill

Kansas lawmakers had enough a year ago, voting to raise taxes over Gov. Sam Brownback's (R) veto, and on Wednesday night, Oklahoma lawmakers gave final approval to a bill that will generate $450 million in new revenue from a $1-a-pack surcharge on cigarettes, increasing the gas tax by 3 cents and 6 cent for diesel, and raising taxes on oil and gas production to 5 percent, from 2 percent.

House Bill 1010XX, which was described as "the largest teacher pay raise in the history of the state" passed both the state House and Senate this week. Republican Governor Mary Fallin rushed to sign the measures into law Thursday. Rural hospitals and nursing homes are closing, prison populations are at crisis levels, and state Highway Patrol officers got mileage limits previous year because the state couldn't afford the gas bill.

According to the National Education Association, in 2016, the average salary of teachers in Oklahoma was ranked 49th nationally. But that might not be enough to keep teachers from striking.

The school district will close so teachers can go to the state Capitol to advocate for education.

Poteau schools will be closed Monday (April 2) in support of the teacher walkout.

"This package doesn't overcome shortfall caused by four-day weeks, overcrowded classrooms that deprive kids of the one-on-one attention they need".

"What yesterday looked like a positive step forward and a historic down payment on our children's future now hangs in the balance as the legislature dismantles the funding needed to solve this crisis they created in the first place", Priest said. "We must continue to push for more annual funding for our schools to reduce class size and restore more of the 28% of funds they cut from education over the last decade".

Arizona teachers: 'I don't want to strike, but I will.'

Teachers in NY, the top-ranked state in terms of teacher pay, made $79,152 on average in 2016. This movement, fueled by the courageous acts of teachers, parents, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, custodians, and community members has forced this legislature to finally act.

The teachers are fighting not just for their own salaries, but for boosts to the whole public education system.

"Our classrooms go without updated textbooks, basic supplies, and technology. We must keep fighting for everything our students deserve".

Teachers say they are overworked and underpaid. They're hoping their very public display of frustration will pressure state leaders, such as Gov. Doug Ducey.
