Pres. Trump Says He Wants Military To Do Border Control

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the US military will be used to guard the US-Mexico border.

He's calling it a "big step".

"Now President Donald Trump has said that he wants to hit us with nuclear bombs".

Trump has already blasted Mexico and threatened to upend the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) over the caravan. He lamented what he called "horrible" USA laws that left the southern border poorly protected.

"We are going to be guarding our border with our military", Trump told reporters during a lunch session at the White House with leaders of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Mexico has said such "caravans" of mostly Central Americans, including many escaping violence in Honduras, have occurred since 2010.

Trump said he thought Mexico was having some success in stopping the caravan. The President had threatened to end the NAFTA agreement if the Mexican government did not stop the caravan and to end US aid to Honduras. "But we will see what happens. Congress MUST ACT NOW!", Trump tweeted. -Baltic Summit, asserting that he had a meeting with Defense Secretary James Mattis "in a little while" to discuss the militarization of the border.

U.S. Army General Joseph Votel, who oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East as the head of Central Command, said allied troops have made inroads in taking back Islamic State held territories, but said the group's presence "is not gone".

They built infrastructure such as roads and fences and conducted surveillance on the ground and in the air, but left it to the border patrol to make arrests - because of the troops' lack of expertise in border enforcement and limits on the tasks that active duty military forces can perform domestically.

Rep. Francis Rooney (R-Fla.), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, appearing on Fox News, said he advocated abiding by "the normal process".

"I think we should put that new law to a vote in the Senate as soon as possible", he said on Twitter.

According to a BuzzFeed report, the caravan was organized by People Without Borders.

Trump tweeted earlier Tuesday that the caravan "better be stopped before" it reaches the USA border, and dangled the North American Free Trade Agreement as "in play", an apparent threat to cancel the trade deal that has benefited Mexico's economy.

In spite months of efforts, no immigration deal has emerged in the Republican-led Congress, where lawmakers are not expected to pass much major legislation ahead of November's midterm congressional elections.
