Trump Expects To Meet North Korea's Kim in May Or Early June

The Trump administration says North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is willing to discuss denuclearization with the U.S.

Trump later threatened to hold off on signing the renegotiated deal until after his summit with Kim, which was widely seen as a move to pressure Seoul to remain tough with Pyongyang.

The confirmation follows what seems to be weeks of backchannel diplomatic efforts between the United States and the North Korean government, with the USA effort being led primarily by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Washington's long-held stance is that it will not accept a nuclear-armed North Korea.

But Kim's recent trip to China and a series of back-channel contacts between the U.S. and North Korea have raised hopes that a deal may just be possible.

CNN reported on Saturday that the USA and North Korea have been holding secret, direct talks to prepare for the summit.

"I think it's going to be a very exciting thing for the world".

Several of China's top state-controlled newspapers, featuring a front page story of Chinese President Xi Jinping meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, are sold at a news kiosk in Beijing on March 28.

"We'll be meeting with them sometime in May or early June", Trump told reporters during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.

He also delivered a report on developments around the Korean peninsula, including the separate summit with South Korea to be held later this month, KCNA said.

The move suggests that the communist nation's diplomats are trying to drum up worldwide support for leader Kim Jong-un's vision for denuclearization. Till then Washington was yet to hear directly from Pyongyang on the invitation extended by Kim via South Korean intermediaries.

It remains unclear if Trump recognizes what "denuclearization of the Korean peninsula" might entail for the United States.

He blamed previous administrations for allowing the relationship with North Korea to get to a crisis point, or failing to negotiate an end to a nuclear program that targets the United States.

It is scheduled to take place without the months of groundwork that usually precedes such meetings.

Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar is also considered as one of the possible locations, the report added.
