"We salute the efforts of our scientists and recall the leadership of (former prime minister) Atal (Bihari Vajpayee) ji", Modi said. "Honourable Prime Minister took my name in his radio programme, it's a very happy moment for me", said Anish Bhanwala. "Special in the sense that this time there were many pathbreaking "firsts", he said in reference to multiple first-time medallists and records created by athletes in different sports.

Turning to water conservation, he said India has traditionally done it and cited examples of many temples and other historic places that have done so and noted that some rivers in states like Kerala and Uttar Pradesh have been revived recently.

"Do we not feel that water conservation must be a social responsibility?" The prime minister drew from the teachings of Prophet Mohammad and said he believed in knowledge and compassion. "Budget under the MGNREGA is also utilised for this water conservation activity". Mr Modi said, in the last three years, almost 150 lakh hectares of land got the benefit through water conservation and water management measures.

"Seven thousand workers under the MGNREGA worked very hard for 70 days and finally succeeded in reviving Kuttumperoor river there", he claimed.

Modi also hailed the performance the Indian squad in the Commonwealth Games, saying they made every Indian proud and especially lauded woman athletes for their show. He said, all wrestlers who represented India returned home with a medal.

"This is an opportunity for those young people who wish to contribute to the country, bring about a change in society and learn something in the process", he said. "The best of the best interns, who have done exceptional work at college and university levels, will be given prizes at the national-level", PM Modi said.
