Minnesota Vikings Exercise Fifth-Year Option on Trae Waynes

They have yet to reach a new deal with linebacker Anthony Barr, the 2014 first-round draft pick now in the final year of his rookie contract.

After struggling to break into the starting lineup in his first two years, Waynes started all 16 games for the Vikings as he played a significant part in their run to the NFC Championship Game.

The Vikings also signed 17 undrafted free agents, including South Dakota State wide receiver Jake Wieneke, a Minnesota native.

Could Microsoft Earnings Have Been Better?
Despite the earnings beat, shares of the company stock fell 1% in after hours trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange. For the full fiscal year ending in June 2018, EPS is forecast at $3.65 on revenues of $107.29 billion.

The Minnesota Vikings announced on Monday that they've re-signed veteran cornerback Terence Newman, which is notable, because Newman is now that oldest defensive player in the National Football League, following the retirement of James Harrison in April. He joined the Vikings in 2015. He's started 205 games while tallying 876 tackles (745 solo), 172 passes defensed and two sacks. Newman has 205 career starts.

The Vikings and Waynes will look to sign a new deal within the next year or so, but he's now situated under his current contract to be with the team through 2019.

Locking Trae Waynes in for one more season not only allows the team to evaluate him for one more year but it also buys more time for Mackensie Alexander and 2018 draft selection Mike Hughes to develop in Mike Zimmer's defense. In 2017, the 39-year-old Newman was on the field for 555 snaps, which was the third-highest total among all Vikings corners.
